Coastal light. Quiet control.

Beachfront homes are demanding, on the architecture and on the technology. Salt air, glare and glass drove every decision here: hardware chosen for a coastal environment, lighting layered to work with the sun, and control kept to a few well placed points so the outlook is never competing with a screen.

What defines the work.

A beachfront Bondi home in oak, stone and glass, where Control4 automation, architectural lighting, shading, audio, intercom and cameras are designed around the light and the ocean outlook.

Automation
Control4 processors with flush mounted touchscreens, discreet keypads and app control.
Lighting
DALI lighting control with scenes across living, kitchen, stairs, library and bedrooms, including step lighting.
Shading
Motorised sheer and blockout curtains on shared triggers with lighting.
Audio visual
Distributed audio, garden and terrace speakers, and televisions concealed within oak joinery.
Network
Structured cabling, managed switching and wireless coverage across levels and terrace.
Security
Cameras, intercom, gate access and alarm integrated into one control layer.

Design approach

How it is resolved.

Design around the view

Everything visible was reduced. Displays sit behind joinery, speakers are finished flush, and control points are limited to the places the household naturally passes.

Where a screen was needed it is small, wall mounted and away from the outlook.

Light that changes with the day

During the day the house is lit by the ocean, so the lighting design earns its place after sunset: cove light in circulation, step lights on the stair, and warm feature scenes in the living rooms.

Curtains are treated as part of that design, cutting glare in the afternoon and closing bedrooms at night on schedule.

Hardware chosen for the location

Coastal installations fail on details, so exterior cameras, speakers and cabling were specified and positioned with salt exposure in mind, and terminations kept protected and accessible.

The rack is consolidated, labelled and documented, keeping service straightforward.

The result

How the house behaves.

The house feels calm. One interface for lighting, music, comfort, shading, intercom and cameras, and nothing on the walls that argues with the architecture or the view.

For the household it is simply a beach house that behaves properly, day after day, in a demanding environment.
